H.G. Cocks

H. G. Cocks is lecturer in history at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the author of Nameless Offences: Homosexual Desire in 19th Century England (Tauris, 2003), and The Modern History of Sexuality (Palgrave, 2005) as well as a clutch of academic articles on social life in modern Britain.

His next book, Classified: The Secret History of the Personal Column, tells the stories behind ads for husbands, wives, and lonely hearts going back to the 17th century.  It shows how small ads became central to the modern search for love, sex and friendship. It was sold to Random House Books in 2007.
